Steve Haugaard Announces Run for South Dakota Governor

Former Speaker of the House To Challenge Noem.

Sioux Falls, SD —Representative Steve Haugaard has thrown his hat in the ring to be the next governor of South Dakota.

Said Haugaard of the decision to run, “We need a full-time governor who puts South Dakotans first. Period. Kristi Noem has been beholden to special interests, from the NCAA, to big business, to corporate lobbyists. We need leadership that focuses on serving the needs of our
people, not using the office as a stepping-stone.”

Added Haugaard, “There are problems in this state that can be solved with hard work and leadership. That’s how I plan to govern, and I very much look forward to travelling the state and contrasting my vision with that of Governor Noem’s.”

Steve Haugaard brings a wealth of knowledge, deep relationships throughout the state, and a humble, stalwart work ethic to serve South Dakotans.

Haugaard was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2014 and reelected in 2016, 2018, and 2020. He was elected by the members of the House to serve as Speaker Pro Tem in 2018, and then elected again to serve as Speaker of the House in 2019 and 2020. He has held over 25 positions in the House including chairman of many committees within the South Dakota Legislature. Steve has been a fighter for South Dakotans and will bring that experience to the governor’s office.

Haugaard’s campaign plans to focus on the grassroots of South Dakota and build a movement county-by-county as he travels the state.
